A business on the Mansfield Road parade in the centre of Sherwood — that is its front gutter in the picture at the top of this page, full of moss above the shops. Round the back was worse: years of leaves had rotted into a black sludge that filled the rear gutter and was holding water against the brickwork beside a first-floor window.
